Antique Japanese Koto O-suriage Tachi Katana Samurai Long Sword Blade 15th/16thc For Sale
Antique Japanese Koto O-Suriage Tachi Katana Samurai Long Sword Blade 15th/16thC
This is for an antique Japanese koto o-suriage tachi katana samurai long sword, 15th / 16th century (1401-1600). The slender, slightly curved, single-edged, steel blade, is traditionally forged, displaying a wavey hamon (hard cutting edge), along its length. This is a koto blade (old blade), of o-suriage, as it has been shortened at the tang, from an early tachi blade, into a katana. This blade would would greatly benefit from being polished, as the hamon is fairly weak, although none the less remains visible and attractive. Although shortened, this sword remains longer than the average katana at 74.6 cm in length (measured in a straight line across the back of the blade, from tip to munemachi (where blade meets tang), which is easily exceeds2 shaku (60 cm). The blade would have been considerably longer, before being shortened at the tang. This blade weighs 654 grams. The condition is generally very good for its age, the blade is out of polish, although the hamon does remain visible, the tang has evidently been shortened, and the kissaki shows signs of wear. Please see images.
Guaranteed old and original.
Notes: In the late 1500s and early 1600s many old surviving tachi blades were converted into katana by having their original tangs cut (o-suriage), the signature (mei) would be lost in this process.
