Antique Japanese Meiji Era 120 Yr Old Wood & Lacquer Obon Ozen Tray Table :
This is an antique Japanese late Meiji Era (c. 1890) serving have been used to serve tea or small appetizers. It has four curved feet to raise it above the tatami floor where it was used as a small individual table (ozen).
It is made of cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese dark brown lacquer. There is a fretwork design around the top rim that has been deeply etched into the layers of lacuqer. It then was filled with a burgundy tone (see picture 7). Having been used lovingly and protected by its original storage box (see pictures 10 & 11 - not included) for over a century, with the exception of one nick on the top (see picture 6) and some side shrinkage of the lacquer on one corner (see pictures 10 & 11 ) this tray remains overall in veryfine condition.Sits squarely on all four legs.
For over 120 years this lacquer tray has been protected by its original lidded storage box (seen in picture 10) as well as a cocoon of green cotton slip (see picture 10) to protect it from the harsh changing climate of Japan.Signed on the lid of the presentation box (see picture 11) is the name of the Japanese artist,Reishaas well as the Japanese words for"set of 5 Shimeizen style lacquer trays"
The tray measures 12 1/2" square by 4" tall (32 x 10 cm).A very elegant and functional piece of art to display your treasures.
