Antique Japanese Meiji Era 8 Drawer Chestnut Tansu Document Desk - Chest For Sale

Known as a chobadansu, or a Tsukue-dansu (writing desk) this tansu chest was made and used about 100 years agoin the late Meiji period (c. 1910). This style chest was intended to sit on the tatami floor and act as a writing desk being the perfect height for the person sitting on the floor to easily and comfortably put pen to paper. It has a nice configuration of 8 drawers (two behind the lift out section on the right (see picture 4) as well as two sliding doors. The various drawers were of a size that could hold everything from large pieces of writing paper and accounts as well as smaller drawers used to store brushes, inks, and valuables. Side handles made this chest easily portable (see pictures 6 & 7).

This tansu chest is made of solid kuri(Japanese chestnut)wood with kiri (paulownia) wood interiors and hardened hinoki woodpeg construction (see picture 10). All the hardware is made ofhand forged copper with handles in the classic mokko(melon) shape.

All eight drawers as well as the two doors moveeasily without binding. This chest has a 100+ year old warm aged patina and remains in very fine condition and should serve one well for another century of use.It measures23" wide by12" high by 11" deep (58 x 30 x28 cm). A great piece of Japanese history and avery interesting and functional piece of furniture.
