Antique Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Shakudo Snuff Box c1890
This is for an antique Japanese Meiji period bronze shakudo snuff box, circa 1890. Made of bronze, of bow shaped outline, with a hinged lid. The lid and the sides are decorated with shakudo applique, the lid depicts a Geisha on a chased foliate ground, and the side appliqeus depict blossoming foliage. The lid opens to a shakudo lined interior. This type of ware was made by artisans who had previously specialised in katana fittings such as tsuba, menuki, and kozuka. The box measures 4.2 cm in length, 3.7 cm in width and 1.9 cm in height. It weighs 25 grams. The condition is generally excellent, without damage or repair, the bronze has the patina of age.
