Antique Japanese Meiji Signed Komai Gold & Silver Damascened Belt Buckle C1900 For Sale
Antique Japanese Meiji Signed Komai Gold & Silver Damascened Belt Buckle c1900
This is for an antique Japanese Komai gold and silver damascened belt buckle, signed 'S. Komai', 'Kyoto', Meiji Period, circa 1900. Made of yellow metal, the two-piece foliate form buckle, is inset with two gold and silver damascened iron plaques, which fit together to form a Japanese landscape, depicting Buddhist shrine-temple buildings, a torii gateway, a pine tree, a sailing boat, all against a black moonlight sky, with a snow capped Mount Fuji in the background. The underside has two loops, to fit onto a belt, and is clearly marked with a Japanese character signature and makers mark in English;
'S. KOMAI. KYOTO'
The gold inlay tests as near pure gold. This belt buckle measures 7.2 cm in length and 5.2 cm in width. It weighs 51 grams. The condition is generally excellent, the silver has light tarnishing from age, there is no damage and no repair. Please see images.
Notes: Komai Otojiro (1842-1917) began to produce works displaying the renowned textured inlay in gold and silver "Nunome-Zougan", after studying inlay techniques with a sword-fitting artisan called Misaki Shusuke from Higo. Komai Otojiro retired in 1906, and his son Seibei continuing to work until 1912. The Kyoto dealer, Ikeda Seisuke, marketed most of Komai's work, and won a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900.
