DETAILS OF ITEM

This is an antique Japanese sewing box called Haribako that measures 11.5 inches wide by 9.25 inches high by 7.5 inches deep. Finished in Negoro lacquer, it was used to store sewing tools, thread, needles, fabric swatches and an assortment of accoutrements.

Featuring a secret hidden drawer found behind the lift-out tray under the hinged top lid, it was an area where the lady of the house could hide her valuables and cash from her husband or a professional seamtress could keep her earnings. The lift-out tray features a removable square tray that was used to hold a pin cushion and a post that can stand vertical to hold the metal clip that is known as the third hand.

There is a vertical slit on the right side rear top that was used to hold a ruler known as a Shaku diagonally in place.

All of the bronze fittings are original to this piece. The condition is very good with the exception of the front bottom corners that have some age related repairs (see photos). Its age is from the 1920\'s (Taisho era).
