Antique Japanese Small Tansu Personal Storage Box With Keyed Locks:
This is a Japanese small tansu /personal storage boxfrom the early 1900's (1910 - 1930)It has acedar wood bodywith allkiri wood drawers, (This is a light weight asian wood called paulownia in English).The hardware is copper with an aged patina. This was made in an era whenwood pegs were the standard way to join together joints. They don't rust and theyexpand and contract with the wood in differing levels of humidity.These can be stronger andmore durable than nails. The pegsarebamboo and are on the outside and on the inside bottoms of the drawers.There is a close up of theseexterior pegs and joints on the side corner panel in photo # 8.There have been some repairs done to this on the back. These repairs weremade with finish nails, not wooden pegs. The locks in this work and a key to the locksis included.(Photo # 3)
