A Japanese woodblock print probably of a noble lady. The artist, Shunman, was known for his pictures of famous beauties, bijin-ga. The lady depicted here is carrying articles I cannot identify, perhaps a folded fan in one hand, but her splendid kimono indicates high status. Someone suggested that the person is a male Kabuki actor in a female rôle.It is printed on a Japanese kind of paper (which looks like fibrous felt when looked at under magnification). I am uncertain of the relevance of the newspaper cutting pasted on the backing board.A paper conservator might be able to lay the print flat but that is a very skilled procedure.
Size: 9 1/2 x 7 inches / 24 x 18 cm, approximately.
