Antique 19th Century Tefillin and Hand Embroidered Bag
Beautiful antique tefillin with a hand embroidered drawstring velveteen storage bag. The bag is black with a hand embroidered design in red, green & yellow. It's dated 1897 which is sewn on the bag. There is also Hebrew lettering at the top but I'm not sure what it spells out. Lined with tan colored fabric. 3 multi colored wool pom poms on the bottom. The tefillin have the attached leather straps tied neatly at the top & I didn't loosen/unravel them.
Approximate measurements:Bag:Height : 9.25"Width: 8"Tefillin:2 1/2" tall x 3 3/8" wide2 1/2" tall x 3 4/8" wide
These were lovingly used and then stored in a smoke-free home. Wear consistent with age (120 years old!) & use. Please see pics - the fabric on the bag has scattered threadbare spots and several holes, revealing the lining. A side seam has a small area (~1.25") that's separated & can be re-sewn. The tefillin appear to be in good antique conditionwith some scuffing & areas of bubbling (on 2 sides of arm box) noted. Also, one leather strap is brown & the other is black & looks newer (the tefillin belonged to my grandfather so thinking it must have worn out & he replaced it).
A beautiful & rare collectible piece of history.
