Antique John Bliss Taffrail Log With Original Wooden Box:
Antique Bliss American Taffrail Log
This is a beautiful, antique taffrail log made by John Bliss & Company in the late 1800s.Includes the taffrail log (serial number 134), the brass rotator, the original cotton rope and the original wooden box with instructions. The rope which connects the taffrail log to the rotator has been shortened for display purposes, however, if desired either the original rope or a new longer rope could be attached. This set is in excellent vintage condition. Both the taffrail log and the rotator have a beautiful patina which I have chosen not to polish. The glass faceplate on the taffrail log has some internal debris, however since the brass plate which holds this on can be removed, the plate could be cleaned. The original roping is intact but somewhat soiled with age.The original wooden box has significant shelf wear as pictured, however, is intact and is strong. The metal hinges have become rusted and have broken. I don't believe this item has ever been in the water or used on a boat, however, since it was made well before I was born, I can't attest to this! But, by all appearances, I think this is the case. Approximate dimensions: taffrail log (10.75" x 3"), rotator (9.5" x 3"), box (19.5" x 7" x 4").I haven't measured the rope, but it is long.
