Antique Jonah Kumalae Hawaiian Ukulele, Circa 1917:
Antique Jonah Kumalae Hawaiian small size Ukulele. Circa 1917. 21" long by 5 3/4" wide at the widest part, by 2 1/4" thick. Made of koa wood. Completely Original, including original strings and felt-lined carrying case. The paper label on the inside (fifth photo) reads: "Jonah Kumalae, Manufacturer of Ukuleles, Awarded Gold Medal for Ukuleles and Taro Patches at the P.P.I (Panama Pacific International) Exposition (1915)". Below that writing is the company's logo, and then the following words: "Phone 2384, 1719 Liliha Street, Honolulu". There is also a Gold Medal KUMALAE label at the top of the instrument (sixth photo). Theoriginal owner's name (and year)is written in ink on the underside of the leather strap -- "Mabel Tesche, 1917" (seventh photo).Estate find -- this instrument has been carefully stored in an attictrunkfor many, many years.
