Antique Knitting Lady Silver Thimble w/ Waffle Knurling
French * Circa 1900
This scarce silver thimble was made at the turn of the century with "waffle" style knurling. There are all sorts of opinions about what the featured lady is doing. I think she's knitting, but some resources say she's crocheting or tatting. Bleeding hearts blossoms circle around the band behind her and the pattern goes up into the knurling. It is stamped with the tiny French boar's head silver hallmark that indicates 800/1000 pure silver & it also has the maker's mark (rubbed).
The condition is excellent, in round with no holes, repairs or other damage and it's about an American size 8. This thimble was in the collection of Diane Pelham Burn and is the one that was photographed for Plate 41 (page 41) in Thimbles of France With Waffled Knurling by Beryl Frank.
