CIRCA 1841............ a bone bobbin with polychrome engraving. The engraving is not easy to read as it is a lengthy verse. Some of the words.. ..ship... \"ease a aching heart\"...It is a wide bobbin and has alot of engraving..

Part of a lace bobbin collection that belonged to Gertrude Whiting, author of \"Old Time Tools and Toys of Needelwork\' and \"A lace guide for Makers and Collectors\". The deaccession is from the F.I.T. Gertrude Whiting was made a Honorary Fellow of the Metropolitan Museum Of Art. In 1916 Miss Whiting became the founder and president of the \"The Needle and Bobbin Club\". The group was formed at the Metropolitan museum.Charter memebers included some of the greatest American collectors and included people like Mrs. J.P.Morgan and Mrs. Henry E.Coe,Mrs. De Witt Clinton etc....most of the lace that was collected was eventually bequeathed to major museums in the United States and it is said that through this group the lace and textile collections allowed the museums to flourish and start to match the great museum collections in Europe.

This club was described in Vogue in 1926..
