Antique Late 18th Early 19th Century Naive Oil On Panel Shipwreck Seascape For Sale
Antique Late 18th Early 19th Century Naive Oil On Panel Shipwreck Seascape
The painting measures 292 x 192 and a half (74cm x 50cm). It is painted on a one piece 7mm thick Mahogany panel.
It is in extremely good condition with no paint loss although there are two surface marks/rubs. These are minimal, have not damaged the paint surface and should be easy to remedy if needs be. They don't affect the overall presentation of the work. There is a hairline split along the grain midway along the left hand edge that extends 28cm towards the middle of the painting. This split is less than 1mm wide. The painting is grubby throughout and would benefit from a clean but I'll leave that up to the successfull buyer.
I have tried to photograph the painting in detail to highlight the imperfections. The work was photographed outdoors on a bright day. No artificial light or flash was used and so the images give an accurate representation of the actual colours. The reflective varnished surface wasn't easy to photograph and any differences in colour is due to this. The colours are uniform throughout.
I am nearly sure the work depicts the grounding of the Santa Maria off Cap Haitien in 1492.
The artist has not signed the work and it will be shipped unframed and unglazed.
Feel free to ask if you require further information and please be aware I operate a full refund policy.
Every item I sell is fully warranted to be as described. I use the standard cataloguing terms as stated below;
where the bold coloured text which forms the listing's heading reads 'by' and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in my opinion by the artist;
where the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in my opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part;
where the expression 'circle of' is used, the work is in my opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence;
where the expression 'follower of' is used, the work is in my opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil;
where the expression 'manner of' is used, the work is in my opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date;
where the term "after" is used, the work is in my opinion a copy or pastiche (of any date) of a work by the artist. Where the term 'signed...' is used in my opinion the work has been signed by the artist, where the term 'with signature...' or 'bears signature...' is used in my opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist.
