Antique Mauchline Ware Thimble Case & Thimble
Scottish * Isle of Man Scene * Circa 1880s
This little Mauchline ware slant top thimble box holds a nickel silver thimble in the velvet lined interior. The thimble was made by Charles Iles Co. and has their three thimble trademark. The top has some small needle holes, but the unusual design is crisp and the overall condition is good. It is about an American size 9.
The top of the box has a transfer print of "Kirk Braddan, Isle of Man", an island off the coast of England. The case was made of sycamore wood by the W. & A. Smith Co in Mauchline Scotland. The condition is excellent with no damage and the varnish is intact. One side has a little knot, but it's not damage and the varnish over it is perfect. The hinge is original and strong. It measures 1 1/2" deep, 1" wide and 1 3/8" tall. It closes well with a flip up brass C clasp. One like this is shown on p. 125 of Thimbles by Edwin Holmes.
