Henry Milward & Sons (now known as ENTACO) is a British manufacturer of sewing needles.
The earliest reference to the Milward family in connection with needle making is a James Milward, who was a needle maker on Fish Hill in 1676.
Symon Milward created the company of Henry Milward & Sons aka Milward's Needles (Milward's) in 1730 at the age of 40, in Redditch, UK. It was however, his son Henry who takes credit for the foundation of the company as the company was registered in his name during the first year of his birth.[see Redditch Museum Family tree]
From the first half of the 18th century, the name of Henry Milward and Sons became well known as the makers of good quality needles.
At one point they were the largest manufacturer of its type in the world, producingknitting needles, surgical needles and fishing tackle,from a number of factories both in the UK and globally, such as Murcia, Spain.
This beautiful hinged box is a little beat up but could have lots of great uses, and would look much improved with just some furniture crayon touchup and oiling. Store your buttons, your beads, your bangles. Can hold small spice bottles, or nut & bolts and the like. If you sew a lot, you can store your bobbins and thread. Measures 10-3/4" x 11-1/2" x 8" at its highest point (3" at the lowest); compartments are 1-5/8" x approx 2-5/8". Says on back, "To be used for Milward's Needles ... Property of The Spool Cotton Co. Dovetailed joints and brass hinges.Has some scratches and scuffs, and wood is cracked in 2 places. Photos serve as description -- sold AS IS.
