This is a gorgeous antique turquoise and white plate from Minton with an incised gold-embellished border. The white pate-sur-pate depicts a bird on a flowering bramble eyeing a stag beetle on a leaf below. Another bird hovers above. The incised border bears a pierced key-link motif in gold. The plate measures 9 5/8" in diameter. It is back-stamped with Minton's globe mark for 1873-1912, and impressed with a circle within a triangle and the letter O, which in Minton's date code stands for October, 1878 (Kovels). The plate is unsigned, but we believe it to be the work of Desire Leroy, who was with Minton's from 1874-1890. (Leroy's signature is on another Minton pate-sur-pate plate we have listed separately.)
The plate is in wonderful antique condition with no cracks, chips or scratches. There is an area of light crazing lines on the turquoise to the right of the tail and wing of the larger bird. Next to this is a small section of the border where the gold edging seems to have been re-touched; and on the back, in the same location, there is a small dimly yellowed area. As gold leaf work of Minton's quality does not lose its luster, we think something happened to this small area of the plate and someone had it retouched. One gold medallion, and a 3" strip below it appear touched up, and the embossed small circles appear different from the rest of the border. We show that section, front and back, in photos 3 and 4. These small defects are not easy to see and do not detract from the stunning beauty of this desirable antique plate, executed by a masterful artist.
We have two other Minton plates listed separately, one of which makes a fine companion piece to this one, and is signed by Minton pate-sur-pate artist, Desire Leroy. The other is a fish decoration, signed by Minton artist E.C. Bayley.
