Stunning and exquisitely made, this pate-sur-pate plate depicts a swallow and a moth hovering over a cluster of wildflowers and mushrooms on a field of brilliant turquoise. There is a delicate interior border of white which sets off a pierced key-link border gilded in Minton's celebrated method, perfected by Colin Minton Campbell. The plate is signed by listed pate-sur-pate artist Desire Leroy, who was at Minton's from 1874-1890. (Leroy was one of the talented French porcelain painters enticed to England by Minton's during the Franco Prussian War. In 1890, after working at Minton's, he went on to achieve great artistic renown at Royal Crown Derby). The plate measures 9 5/8" in diameter. The back stamp on this plate was used by Minton's from 1873-1912; it is also signed by Davis Collamore & Co. of New York, for whom the plate was made.
The condition of this stunning antique plate is excellent. There are no chips, cracks, scratches, or crazing. There is one area of dull gold shown in picture close-up (about 4 inches long) which corresponds to a dimly yellowed area on the back of the plate, shown in picture 6. As gold leaf work of Minton's quality does not lose its luster, we think something happened to this small area of the plate and someone had it retouched. One gold medallion, and a 4" strip below it appear touched up, and the decoration of small circles appears different than the rest of the border. This small area along the edge hardly shows, and we do not believe it detracts at all from the grace and craftsmanship of this rare and wonderful antique piece.
We have two other antique Minton plates listed separately, one of which would be a fine companion piece to this one, and is most likely also done by Leroy, although not signed. The other is a fish scene, signed by Minton artist E.C. Bayley.
