~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE:
Height (including mounts)- 27.5" (70 (ceramic base alone) - 13.5" (35 cm)
Diameter (of ceramic base) - 8" (20 cm) DESCRIPTION:
Fine and rare William Moorcroft art pottery lamp decorated with an unusual and complex flambe type glaze.
Glazed stoneware body with original decorated brass metal fittings.
Signed on the bottom of the ceramic base with impressed marks and a paper label (see photos).
This lamp is an original factory made lamp, decorated in the Arts and Crafts taste and probably circa 1920's. The glaze is quite fine and appears to be a type of 'flambe' glaze with reds, pinks, dark maroons, and yellows over a light beige or white ground. The finish is high gloss and the glaze is very beautiful.
The brass base and fixtures appear to be original, or at least period (possibly put on after the ceramic base was imported to the United States so that the piece could be retailed) and are in the late Aesthetic Period - Arts & Crafts or early Art Deco taste.
The signatures can not be seen when the mounts are in place. The mounts have developed a beautiful dark patina that compliments the fine glaze of the body.
There is no shade and there is no finial. AGE: Circa 1920's CONDITION:
Good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: No chips, no hairlines, no scratches, and no restoration to the ceramic body. No damage to the ceramic body of the lamp. Light wear and a dark, unpolished patina to the brass lamp mounts. The light pull switches appear to be in good proper working order, however they have not been tested as the lamp cord has been cut where it leaves the base, at the bottom. So, the lamp will have to be at least partially re-wired and I always recommend re-wiring of lamps for safety. PLEASE NOTE : Due to size, this lamp can only be shipped internationally if it is disassembled. The base and the metal mounts will be carefully and safely packed and double-boxed (the mounts will not be touching the ceramic body) and it will be up to the new owner to have the lamp re-assembled if desired. Moorcroft is a British pottery manufacturer based in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, which was founded by William Moorcroft.
In 1897 Staffordshire pottery manufacturers James Macintyre & Co. Ltd employed 24-year-old William Moorcroft as a designer, and within a year he was put in full charge of the company's art pottery studio. Moorcroft's first innovative range of pottery, called Florian Ware, was a great success and won him a gold medal at the St. Louis International Exhibition in 1904.
Moorcroft's reputation was enhanced when Queen Mary, a keen collector of his works, granted him a royal warrant in 1928. Shortly before the death of William in 1945, his elder son, Walter Moorcroft, took control of the business, which he continued to develop. The company's royal warrant was re-issued in his name in 1946.
Both father and son also experimented with high-temperature flambé techniques, producing high glaze with vibrant colour. PLEASE NOTE :
