Antique Mother of Pearl Pin Cushion / Disc
English * Circa 1870
Both sides of this antique disc style pin cushion are mother of pearl with intricate carved designs. The cushion is rose colored silk. This type of pincushion allowed the pins to be pushed flat into the silk "sandwich" around the cushion's edges so that it could be dropped in a work bag.
The mother of pearl is beautifully luminous and the entire piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. The cushion is intact and it measures 1 3/8" in diameter. Pin discs in this style are shown on p. 143 of Gay Ann Rogers' book The Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
