Shrewsbury, England.Description:This is a birch bark box made by the Micmac people on the East coast of Canada. This type of box was made under the direction of the Ursuline nuns who taught them how to embroider in convent schools. This is the reason for the very French style of decoration. The box may have been taken back by a visitor or sent as a gift. The practice began in 1700 and continued until the late 19th century. I have had this box verified by a specialist in North West coast artifacts as a 19th century example.All of the colours will have been produced using local natural materials to make dyes and all of the materials used would have been sourced locally. It is a real treasure.It is very delicate; considering the nature of the materials used and the miles that it has travelled it has survived in very good condition.I purchased it from a lady who had originally bought it from a London dealer.It is completely delightful and will be a great find for the right person.
Condition:Very good. Some of the white trim has worn away as can be seen. Delicate but relatively strong.
Measurements:7.5 cm by 4 cm and 2.6 cm in height.
