Antique, Northwood, Carnival Glass, Pumpkin Marigold, \"Nippon,\" 9-inch, Bowl :
$549.99

Northwood\'s \"Nippon\" pattern (not to be confused with Fenton\'s \"Peacock Tail,\" which lacks the central medallion) is sought after by collectors, and this beautiful (just under) 9-inch bowl, in a rare Pumpkin Marigold, demonstrates why. The pattern has a captivating simplicity: panels of concentric, undulating, ribs ripple out from astylized chrysanthemum medallion--the Crest of the Empress of Japan--which gives the pattern its name. A crosshatch basket weave exterior contrasts with, and complements, the interior pattern.

The iridescence is truly spectacular: seen from afar, the bowl glows with golden and rusty pumpkin tones. Upon closer inspection, however, the inner medallion erupts in an intoxicating combination of burgundy, absinthe, chartreuse, and blue curacao. These rich hues spill over the brassy rings of the medallion and ripple out gradually, ebbing in intensity and frequency until reaching the outer rim of pure, ripe, pumpkin. On the reverse, these same tones simmer under the golden-tinged basket weave.

There is a very tiny, insignificant chip, along with some minute roughness, on the lower rim of the collar base:both are more discernable to the finger than to the eye, but they can be viewed by enlarging the last photo. These minute imperfections in no way mar the splendor, or excellent condition, of this bowl--they are, rather, signs of age and appreciative use over the years--but, we are calling paricular attention to them because of the valuation of the piece.

This piece is truly suited for display, and it would be stunning in a well-lit display case, hutch, or curio, or on a surface that is bathed in natural light, placed in such a way that it could be viewed and appreciated from (to the degree possible) various perspectives.According toDavid Doty\'s website, there have been only two other purchases of Pumpkin Marigold bowls in this pattern since 2008, and no sales are noted on Kovel\'s. You might never see a piece of this kind and quality again, so make it a part of your collection while it is available. And purchase with confidence: this piece qualifies forfree shipping, and free, no-questionsreturn!
