Iconography:The Hodegetria or the Directress (in Greek Οδηγήτρια - he One who Shows the Way) - is one of the most common types of iconographic images of Our Lady in Orthodox iconography. The Virgin is depicted with Christ, who sits on her hands, he blesses with his right hand and in his left hand he holds a scroll, sometimes a book, that corresponds to the type of iconographic image of Christ Pantocrator (Almighty). From a dogmatic point of view, the basic meaning of this image is the appearance of the Heavenly King and Judge in the world and worship to the royal Child. According to legend, the first icon of the Mother of God " Hodegetria" was written by St. Luke.
The difference from the fairly close iconographic type of the Eleusa is mutual relationship between the mother and the son: here the center of the composition is Christ, turning to the viewer, the Virgin is also shown frontally or with a slight tilt of the head, pointing with her hand to Jesus.
The icon " Hodegetria" has the image of the Virgin represented in the chest shot, but the shoulder variants are also known (the Kazan icon of the Mother of God), as well as the representations in growth.
According to legend, the very first Hodegetria (the Blachernae icon) was painted by St. Luke. It was brought from the Holy Land by Eudoxia, the wife of the Emperor Theodosius, in the middle of the V century and was placed in the Church of Blachernae. According to other sources, it was placed in the church of the Odigon monastery, that is why, according to one version, there is the name Odigriya. The icon became the protectress of Constantinople. It was carried on the city walls during the attack of enemies. In addition, every Tuesday the religious procession occurred with the icon around the city.
This type of icon of the Virgin was unusually widespread throughout the Christian world, and especially in the Byzantine Empire, Ukraine and Russia.
This type includes such well-known and revered icons like Tikhvin, Smolensk, Kazan, Georgian, Iver, Pimenov, Of the Three Hands, Passion, Czestochowa, Surety of Sinners, Korsun-Toropets etc. The Hodegetria icons with Greek names include Psihosostriya, Perivlepta out my other items! orfor many other interesting and valuable, especially to collectors or fine art enthusiasts, paintings.
