Antique PHOTO ALBUM Civil War Era CDV Tintype Soldiers Edwin Booth Gen Lee 1880s
Incredible estate find – an antique photo album, filled with period images, including many Civil War soldiers in uniform, and a couple of interesting images, marked General Lee and Edwin Booth (read on)! Leather bound album measures about 9” x 12”, is 2" thick, and has two ornate metal latches on the side. The binding is gone and the covers and last (empty) page is loose, but the bulk of the pages are attached and contain 137 mounted images, with an additional 4 photographs that have come loose from album. Of the 141 images, I count ten showing men in military uniforms, along with many civilians, women, and children. To my eye, most look to be family photographs, with the following exceptions: One of the images is marked “Gen. Lee” – it does not look to be an original photo; it is more grainy – could be a manufactured “trading card” of the era?? Another is marked “Edwin Booth”, and could possibly be the brother of John Wilkes Booth – I have included close up photos of both of these images. Two other mounted images of note is one that looks to be a souvenir photo of the era, printed “General Tom Thumb and Wife, Commodore Nutt and Miss Minnie Warren”; another is a period religious card, showing Jesus and an angel, and another All photos look to be in good condition for their age; the album pages are good to fair, with some empty slots, and some discoloration and / or tearing here and there. Many of the images have small pencil script beneath them with locations (Cincinatti, Evansville, Memphis, Bloomington), or names (Capt. Tyler, B. E. Oldham, Billy Boy – “Pretty Little Boy”). I have not tried to remove any of the mounted photos, as it would involve tearing apart the pages. I have tried to describe the album to the best of my ability – feel free to ask questions, and I will do my best to answer you! Overall a wonderful collection of period photographs, offered with .
