Antique Painting Miniature Portrait Soldier Educated Man Original Frame - Wow For Sale
chelseasantiques Store
Up for sale today is a great antique miniature portrait or painting. Sadly, the subject is unidentified - the man looks to be dressed in a military dress uniform from the 1830s or 1840s. He also must have wanted to seem educated because of the bookshelf behind him! This is a very well done painting, but the artist is unknown. If it is signed, I have not been able to locate the signature. The image measures approx. 2 13/16" long x about 2 1/8" wide, in an oval shape. I believe it is painted on bone or some type of ivory-like material. Whatever it is painted on is somewhat transparent, even through the paper backing which it is affixed to. It is thin, and has a slight curl or warp to it, which you don't notice when its in the frame. There is no damage to the painting. I believe it to be its original wooden frame. The frame has a thick black paint or finish, which has crazed over time, and has chipped here and there along the edges. There is a metal bezel which holds a convex glass over the painting, and has little metal prongs to hold the painting (and a cardboard spacer) into the frame (a couple of these prongs appear to have broken off over time). There was also originally a paper backing on the back of the frame which is now gone. "No. 505" is written in red on the upper right corner of the back, and a small brass hanger is nailed to the center of the top edge of the frame. Overall the frame measures approx. 4 5/16" x 5 5/16". This is a really cool vintage miniature portrait painting! It would be a nice addition to your collection! Check out my pictures and email any questions. Thanks for looking!
