Antique Patchwork Durham Quilt Historic Print Textile Archive Star Centre Double:
A beautiful English Durham quiltTrue patchwork, with blocked large strips and the striped central star, there are lots of truly historic C19th fabrics used - some possibly earlierAll cotton, they included large blowsy florals, dark repeat block strips, tree of life scraps, toile de jouey willow tree motifs and dimity all over printsThe design radiates outward from this central star and the quilting zig zags neatly up through the entire body of the quilt
Please note that someone has repaired two strips and used a dark batik Indonesian? cotton which is visible towards the top of the bed and at the foot. Because the colour is so vivid these strips do stand out - the fabric has been hand quilted to join with the stitched zig zag design - and you may feel that you would like to replace these strips with something which is less of a contrast to the main palette
In a way they underline the historic nature of these heirloom textilesThe quilt has been repaired so that it can continue in use and someone has used a remnant of a cotton in their fabric box to effect this repair
The wadding is evenly dispersed around the quilt but I have not washed it.There is a surface mark which is visible on close inspection on one edge and given the fact that the quilt is slightly fusty from storage you may want to dry clean it before use
Large, shown on a small double bed, the quilt measures 80" x 97" (203cm x 247cm) 6'8" x 8'1"
Fabulous to use, it is also an interesting 'document' for a print textile historian
