Antique Persian Mina Decorated Silver Thimble, Signed, 1882
SEE ADDITIONAL PICTURES BELOW
When I first saw this silver thimble I thought it might be a Marsh Arab niello thimble though of a design and with decoration I have not seen before. I have seen quite a few Marsh Arab thimbles decorated with camels, dhows, palm trees, oases etc but never one adorned all round with animals. Thanks to some careful investigations by a friend and thimble researcher I have now learnt something more about this unusual thimble. The black decoration is known as Mina and is used by Sabian jewellers and silversmiths who still live in the Marshes. The inscription on the thimble is in Persian and reads Jarras 1202 or 1303 if - and it seems very likely - an older form of script was used. 1303 in the Hijri calendar is the equivalent of 1882 in the Gregorian or Western calendar. Jarras is a family name and means bell or thimble maker.
The thimble is in excellent undamaged and original condition. Height approx. 1.9 cm; internal base diameter approx. 1.6 cm; weight 5.8 grams.
