Grouping of Four Antique Dog Figurines

Not Sure of Maker, Origin or Age

Many Condition Issues; One is Repaired; Ugly Firing Crack; Chipped Nose

The two whippet dogs measure approximately 4-1/2" tall with one being a bit taller than the other. They weigh 4.7 ounces each. The two smaller dogs measure in the area of 2-3/8" tall and 2-5/8" tall. They each weigh 2.3 ounces.

There are no marks to indicate manufacture. One whippet has an impressed 4 mark on the underside, and the other whippet has the numbers 55 marked on the underside. I am pretty sure that the whippet dogs are Staffordshire, but I could be wrong. The smaller dogs may or may not be Staffordshire.

I might not even be right about the origin. The smaller dogs, or maybe all four dogs, could be German and not English. Or maybe even froma different country. Also not sure of exact age.

I apologize greatly for my ignorance.

Each pair ismade differently. The larger dogs are hollow and have more of a bisque feel. The smaller dogs are a crude solid porcelain. One smaller dog has a somewhat flat bottom, whereas the other small dog has a rather crude concaved bottom.

There are many condition issues.

One whippet has been repaired. There is a break that went all the way around his lower rear, across one front ankle and the other front paw. At some point in its life, this dog has broken entirely from the base. The repair seems old, but it also seems to have been rather well done. It's a clean attachment, and everything is holding together well. I have applied a good deal of pressure, twisted and pushed, and there is no movement.

Though everything seems to be holding together well, I cannot say for certain how well this repair will sustain in the long run.

This dog also has some ugly blackish residue on one side of the base, which I assume to be glue residue from the repair. There is a spot of this residue on the side of his mouth as well. One of the larger spots of residue on the base is near a crater of sort that is quite dirty as well. Under the residue, on the side of the base, there is an approximate 1/2" area of maker related crudeness (or maybe it is an abrasion), and beneath this area on the underside edge, there is a small flake. The underside also has an approximate 3/8" firing crack.

The other whippet dog has an ugly approximate 1" firing crack on his chest that has been painted or colored red, which I assume is entirely make related. There is an approximate 1/8" flake on the edge of this crack. There is a hairline across the crease of his rear right leg (inside area) that I again assume is maker related.

Both dogs are rather crude and definitely show their age. They both have lost essentially all of the gold paint. There may be additional paint loss that I cannot recognize because it is all gone. The dogs have purple discoloration here and there, along with a good deal of black speckles. There's other darkening and related discoloration. The underside edges have craters and related blemishes that are probably from a mixture of maker related crudeness and table wear.

One of the smaller dogs has a large and ugly chip on the side of his nose with a smaller chip on the other side of his nose. The other small dog has a small chip on his right ear, along with some roughness to his nose and other ear. This dog is the one with more of a flat underside, and because of the crude flattened bottom, the edges are more sharp ... so the bottom and underside edges have several flakes, small chips and bites. This dog also has an approximate 1/16" rough spot on his back that may or may not be maker related.

Both of these smaller dogs have quite an evident amount of surface scratching and bites thatare most easily seen on the brown areas (paint loss, white showing). Lots of related rubbing wear. There are many black specks throughout each. Essentially pits, craters and crevices that have gotten dirty over the years. Both are incredibly crude. The paint, especially to the lower areas, is rather irritated, dulled and kind of ugly. Overall darkening and discoloration.

You are getting all four dogs for one money. They all most definitely show a lot of wear and crudeness, so please help me out by closely reviewing the many pics to best judge what you are offerding on (12 pics above plus49 more photos below).

Notice the crude maker blemish or possible abrasion to the bottom edge, along with an ugly amount of what I assume to be glue residue from the repair.

I have included several close-up pics of the repair. The break goes all the way around his lower rear, and also across a front paw and front ankle.

The photo above shows the dark spot of glue residue on his jaw, and you can see a small firing crack to the underside in the photo below.

Large and ugly firing crack to the chest of this dog. Also notice the thin chip to one edge of the crack.
