Antique Primitive Tin Toleware Box: Hand Painted, Black, Gold, Early 1900s For Sale
This little tin box is about recipe box size at 5-3/4" X 3-1/2" X 3-1/2" deep. It was acquired at an estate sale where all of the items being sold were from the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is hand painted and I believe thetole design is actually stenciled on with gold paint with red shading. The top, as shown in the photo, is a cluster of three cherries; the front and back panelshavea swag with a little red flower in the middle; and the end panels have a daisy-like flower. The black paint job is not first rate: there are a few areas where the original drips and brush strokes can be seen and it has now become crazed. This is part of what makes this piece so very charming. The stenciling ismostly intact except for anarea of paint loss on the largest cherry.
Overall I would consider the box to be in nice condition given its probable 100+ year age. There are a number of small dents and dings, nothing of real significance. The lid fits on and off as it shouldwith a small amount of effort. There are a few small areas of paint loss, primarily around the edge where the lid has rubbed; there is one small "blob" of white paint right beneath where the top of the lid ends; and there is some surface rust on the interior including one pin-hole size area where light shows through.
This is an estate piece being sold as is, as found. I cannot guarantee that it has not been exposed to odors: smoking, fragrance, cooking, mustiness, mothballs, other storage odors or pets.
