Antique REED & BARTON Large Silverplate Engraved Grog Ale Pitcher ANGELS SWAN
Antique large silverplate engraved grog/ale pitcher with ceramicliner by Reed & Barton. There is amazing detail on this piece. A beautiful swan sits atop the lid, a duck's head is on the handle and there iswhat looks like a three-dimensional human head on both sides. Floral engraving on both sides with a band of small engravedscenes around the top and near the bottom - most appear to be angels in different settings.We believe pitcher is circa 1870s. Item: Large Silverplate Pitcher with Ceramic Liner
Dimensions (approximate): Pitcher 10 1/4" high (14" to top of Swan finial) 7 1/2" deep with an opening diameter of 5 3/4." Base is about 6 1/2" in diameter. Very heavy at 7 1/2 pounds.
Marks: on Lip "REED & BARTON"on Base "1619/MF'D & PLATED BY REED & BARTON/ATENTED APRIL 6, 1858/AUG. 4, 1868/NOV. 17, 1868/APRIL 6TH, 1872/XTENDED 7 YEARS"Condition: The hinge holding the lid has come off and is not attached to the pitcher - however, it appears that all the original pieces are still with piece and it could be repaired. There is a loss of silverplating and pitcher needs to be cleaned and polished. The engraving of the angels and the swan finial are in very nice condition. There is crazing in the ceramic liner and a couple of cracks in the bottom.This is an antique piece and there are scratches and marks, but still a lovely old piece.
