Antique Rare Jumping Rabbit Norton & Fenton Bennington Vt Ovoid Stoneware Jug For Sale
This superior example of a rare, large, jumping rabbit over a large flower on a 2 gallon, early, tall (approx 13" tall) ovoid jug by NORTON & FENTON, Bennington, Vermont, is particularly rare for several reasons. Folk value, Historical, Rarity. The Folk form is rare because the strong cobalt blue rabbit (normally not very bright blue in Norton & Fenton) is jumping over the additional decoration of a large flower. It fills the front. Also, the stamp is rare-only in existence for 2 years-1845-1847. Julius Norton took on his brother in law, Christopher Webber Fenton, as partner in 1845. The partnership lasted until 1847. For the 2 years you see NORTON & FENTON. Then only JULIUS NORTON, for 3 years, then J & E. The jug is in very solid overall condition and the spider lines throughout are like craquelure of an oil painting-all age related. The hairlines in the 2nd to last photo are the biggest issue and I will emphasize that there are spider lines throughout. Note the spout chip, kiln pops and burn. But still this jug displays great, in person. You will view it as a true antique showing its age and for me the spider lines near the rabbit pose no issue. Additional photos can be sent to you.
