Antique Reverse Painted Glass Pin Cushion/Disc

French * Circa 1880

One side of this little disc style pin cushion has a reverse painted glass picture of a small boat on a picturesque waterway. The frame around it is embossed brass as is the reverse and a blue velvet cushion is between. "Souvenir" is worked into the design on the back. The design on this piece was actually hand painted onto the back of the glass following a black line print transfer that was applied first.

It measures 2" in diameter and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. It has the original velvet cushion. Some English reverse painted glass pin discs are shown on p. 141 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and on p. 139 of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools but the French ones had their own style.
