Antique Roman Mid 1800's Micro Mosaic Goddess Maiden Mythology Locket Pendant :
This beautiful Mid 19th century mosaic pendant is a great example of early mosaic jewelry which used minute pieces of hard stone or glass cemented together to create an artistic picture just as hundreds of pieces of a jigsaw are put together to create a scene. They are sometimes referred to as micro mosaics, micromosaics. There are two types, Roman, ( this is a Roman piece ) which used hard stone and generally depicted classical themes such as ruins or god goddessand Florentine, which used hard glass and had floral designs. These mid nineteenth century pieces were like beautiful miniature paintings. This pendant measures 1 1/4" by 1" not including the bail and is set in a metal with a gold wash. It is in excellent condition other than some minor wear to the wash on the back. Not a single piece missing and the colors are vibrant and fresh. Found in an old estate on Cape Cod. I am always glad to answer any questions. Thanks so much and please help a needy animal if you can. They can't do it themselves. :)
