Antique Rosewood & Bone Knitting Nancy / Peg / Tube

English * Circa 1850

This lovely antique knitting Nancy is hand carved of rosewood and has a beautiful old patina and grain pattern. The top is inlaid with layers of bone*. This style of knitting tool is called by a variety of names. Knitting Nancy, knitting peg, knitting tube, knitting spool and knitting noddy are the ones I've heard. They were extensively used in the 18th and 19th centuries for making tube style cords. Modern plastic ones are now available.

It has a hollow center and steel pegs for the knitting loops. The bone inlay has a couple of minute surface cracks at the top. The condition is otherwise excellent with no chips or loss and it measures 3 1/8" long and 1" in diameter. Carved wood and ivory examples are shown on p. 108 of Needlework Tools and Accessories by Molly Proctor.
