Antique Russian Silver Tea Glass Holder - Moscow 1885:
This is an exquisite antique Russian silver tea glass (cup) holder. The workmanship and design is extraordinary. The piece blends a variety of scenes into a landscape that wraps around the holder. Thesilver is embossed or molded through the entirepiece. The "cut out" top edge reflects the village and seas that encompass the landscape. The scene starts with what looks like Poseidon, God of the Seas, facing a village musician or warrior with the village in his background, behind his back are several lines of Cyrillic statement. The details of the villager, the village, and Poseidon are excellent. The detail shows limited wear, only a few spots where the details are less crisp. The piece stands 4 and 1/2 inches tall (11cm) including the handle. The base is 3 and 1/2 inches in diameter (8 and 1/2 cm). The marks appear to me to be Moscow, dated 1885. The assayer's mark is A.P. 1885. The maker's name is imprinted in Cyrillic. The Silver Standard mark of 84 is clear. The Moscow town mark is clear, as is the imperial double headed eagle. The piece weighs 8 ounces (225 grams). This is clearly an old piece, in excellent condition, appropriate to it's age. It would make a wonderful edition to any collection.
