Antique Sailor’s Macrame Canteen / Flask Whaling Era For Sale
Offered is a rare antique sailor’s macrame canteen or flask made from a flattened oval cork stoppered bottle covered with finely knotted macrame. It has an adjustable strap of striped fabric tape that is adjustable through the knotted loops on the sides. This is fresh out of a Gloucester, MA area estate so likely originated in the whaling or fishing industry there. The macrame is of extremely fine flax or cotton cord. I have had other sailor’s macrame in the past, but never this early or fine. The lower half of the canteen is densely covered, the upper half and neck with a more decorative open knotted design. The macrame covering would help prevent damage to the flask as well as provide a good grip. It is in excellent condition with a well used patina and a few spots of wear, but no real losses. The stripe design on the strap has faded unevenly. It measures 6 3/4” x 4 3/4” x 2”. The strap measures about 46 “ but is adjustable.
