Antique Sangamo Electric Clock Great Case Porcelain Face J E Caldwell Running? Patented March 8 1904

Item Description
Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our UScustomers!

Here is a great old electric clock for you collectors out there for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself.

The clock has a beautiful mahogany cathedral case with inlay trim around the front. The wood has some minor crazing to the finish, but still looks good. The case has four beautifully designed wood legs that match and look appropriate to the clock. There is a crack in the veneer of the clock in the case just below the front clock door. See pic.

The clock also had a mint looking thick porcelain face that is mint. \"J E Caldwell & Company, Philadelphia\" is noted on the porcelain face. They were the jeweler whom sold the clock out of their store at the time. Probably a very unique and expensive clock during its\' time which is why Caldwell would have been selling it. Beautiful gold colored trim plate around the porcelain face of the clock. The clock hands match and look appropriate to the clock. This is a time only clock, no strike or chimes unit with it. Clock case is all there, no missing parts that I can ascertain.

The clock was made by the Sangamo Electric Clock Company. Clock Doc recalls that they were originally a part of the Illinois Clock Co. and then were later acquired by Seth Thomas. The back plate on the clock shows Sangamo as being is Thomaston, CT which is of course where Seth Thomas was. The porcelain face also notes a Pat. March 8 1904 at the bottom center of it. This would make it a very early electric clock. The front door that holds the beveled glass over the face is securely in place. The glass is not blistered or cracked, just some minor surface scratching from age. The latch on the front door works, appears to be made of brass and nicely detailed like the rest of the clock.

The back door is securely attached to the case by its\' hinges as well. Clock Doc and I are not sure that the 400 day pendulum was originally with this clock or added on later to give it the look of a pendulum clock. There is not mechanism to turn the pendulum and the clasp on one side of the pendulum hanger is not there.

The clock buzzes when you have it plugged in and push the rod up to manually start the motor, but does not stay running (yup, clock did not start by themselves back then when you just plugged). them in. So, selling this clock in not running condition. So a great project clock for one of you clock afficionados out there.

Not sure if this is one of those movements that wound itself to run for 24 hours by itself it the power went out. Electricity was unreliable back then, so they invent a movement to meet this need, those folks were ingenious, eh?! The wiring inside the clock is very old, the cloth bound type and the replacement cord on the outside is probably 50 years old. So, I would definitely have a professional look at the wiring and make recommendations before deciding to use with what is there now.

One er that contacted me and has worked on and collected Sangamo clocks for 20 plus years thinks this is a late 1920s Sangamo movement and brass plate inside the back door that were put into an older case. Just sharing that input, you be the judge.

The clock stands 16.25\" tall, by 10-1/8\" across, by 6.25\" wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.

As can be expectedwhen dealing with an antique clock, some adjustments may be needed aftershipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be verydelicate. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocksbefore, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have thepatience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are notour modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Please ask anyquestions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it.

Make sure that this clock meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. The item can be returned, but there is a $60 restocking fee to do so. So, please carefully review all the attached pictures,ask all the questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it. Don\'t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions!

Some information from the internet about the Sangamo Clock Company;

‌The Sangamo Electric Company manufactured their Sangamo Electric Clock from 1919 until 1931. In 1921, Chief Engineer Fred Holtz invented and received a patent for, the “Holtz Patent” Type-A Induction-Reaction A/C motor. The motor originally was designed as an attachment for watt/hour meters to track demand. However, in the Sangamo Electrically Wound Clock that the company later produced, the motor was one of the main components.

In 1924, the Sangamo Electric Company began testing the motor’s ability to run a clock. The tests were fruitful, and the company was able to overcome all odds as it used electricity to wind a mainspring that could power a clock for 24 hours in case of a power failure. During that time, electricity was spreading throughout America, but it was still unreliable; hence there were frequent power failures.

Given the positive results obtained during the tests, the company began producing clocks in the spring of 1926. No expense was spared in the construction of the clock movements, and the same can be said with regards to the cases. Sangamo offered different styles of mantel clocks in mahogany or walnut and cast bronze cases made exclusively for this company by Gorham. They also offered two styles of wall clocks made from cast aluminum and could be finished in black and white enamel or wood grain, depending on the preference of the customers during that time.
