A rare late 19th Century Scottish Gold Clan Badge or Cap Badge for Clan MacLeod dating to c1890, which has been crafted in 9ct Gold by a Provincial Silversmith & Goldsmith Donald McRae of Inverness(please see the detailed close-up photographs provided, which form an integral part of the item's description).
This wonderful Scottish Clan Badge or Cap Badge, which is approx' 49.0mm long by 37.0mm and weighs 13.2 grams, is of a traditional openwork form crafted with a central Clan Crest of a Bull's Head flanked to either side by a Flag within a surround fashioned as a belt bearing the motto: 'HOLD FAST'.
As shown, this fine quality Scottish Provincial Gold Brooch is stamped on the reverse with: the maker's mark 'DM'; the Town Mark 'INS'; and the fineness stamp '9ct', which confirms that it is made from solid 9ct Gold and that it was made by Donald McRae in Inverness.
As shown, this rare Gold Clan Badge is in great condition overall and comes complete & ready to wear with only appropriate wear for a Badge that is approx' 126 years old; commensurate with age the base metal pin, the hinge & 'C' clasp may have been replaced at some time historically.
