Antique Scottish British Basket Hilted Infantry Officers Broadsword, Sword.:
Antique Scottish British Basket Hilted Infantry officers Broadsword.
A genuine Scottish basket hilt broadsword which is pitted overall, but fully intact.
The hilt is more pitted than the blade or scabbard.
The hilt has heavier rust pitting & has a crack through one of its bars.
Pommel is also pitted.
The grip has partially rotted, mostly intact & retains all of its wire wrapping, although now loose.
Remnants of fish skin still remain.
The blade has light pitting & if required, would clean up well.
The original scabbard fits very well, its still firm on the blade & not sloppy.
The scabbard also is covered with light pitting, retains its original mounting rings & its ball at the drag.
The Blade is double edged with two thin fullers either side.
The Blade does not have any visible stamps or engravings but does have its brass proof mark at the ricasso. The proof is the mark of Robert Mole.
Mole was a Birmingham sword maker who made quality swords from 1690 to 1920.
Blade length = 823mm, (32.4”)
Blade width at Ricasso = 29mm, (1.14”)
Sword overall length = 980mm, (38.6”)
Although the sword is pitted overall it’s remarkably intact.
Every part is there, the scabbard still has its two retaining screws at the throat, the pommel is in great condition, and the hilt has no missing bars & is nice & straight. The blade is in fairly good condition & is not loose.
This sword could be restored or left in its current condition, which certainly adds character when hanging on the wall.
