This is a a fine and unusual example of Victorian Scottish stone set jewellery, because it is set with granite rather then the more usual agate stones. In addition, it is a beautiful souvenir for the Island of Jersey, rather than somewhere in Scotland..!The heart comprises a traditional subtle outline of a Christian religious cross, in hand engraved (unmarked) Sterling Silver, and set on each side of the cross section with pink and gray granite, most likely from Aberdeen in Scotland. The hand engraved design on the silver \'cross\' section is detailed and beautifully outlines the capital letters of JERSEY, surrounded with a geometric design theme.Hanging length of ~1.5 inches (3.5cm) long (incl.jump ring), by ~1 &1/8 in. (2.8cm) wide. Weighs 9.1 grams.Good used antique condition. Etched Design This is a a fine and unusual example of Victorian Scottish stone set jewellery, because it is set with granite rather then the more usual agate stones. In addition, it is a beautiful souvenir for the Island of Jersey, the largest of the islands in the English Channel, rather than somewhere in Scotland..!
The heart comprises a traditional subtle outline of a Christian religious cross, in hand engraved (unmarked) Sterling Silver, and set on each side of the cross section with pink and gray granite, most likely from Aberdeen in Scotland, famous for its granite. Aberdeen granite was used to build the terraces of the Houses of Parliament and Waterloo Bridge in London. The hand engraved design on the silver \'cross\' section is detailed and beautifully outlines the capital letters of JERSEY, surrounded with a geometric design theme. The whole heart is edged in a pretty hand etched \'frame\' pattern.
The pendant is not hallmarked, but my jeweller confirms the heart is sterling silver. Due to it most likely originating from Scotland, where a lot of this style of jewellery was made, and hallmarks were often not used. I would estimate the pendant\'s age to be late Victorian era or possibly early 20th century.
Queen Victoria often made Balmoral Castle (in Scotland) her residence, and in doing so, made all things \'Scottish\' very fashionable in the late 19th century. Jewellery items made of Scottish agate and granite were very popular gifts in Victorian times, to a sweetheart, a betrothed or a dearly loved family member or friend. This romantic, but traditionally religious, item was a typical gift brought back from Scotland for a special person..! Over the years I have come across quite a few Scottish agate/granite pieces made with the Jersey theme, so it must have been common for the Scots to have exported their style of jewellery to Jersey for souvenirs.
Condition: The front silver surface is remarkably clear of any dents, dings or scratches, but there are tiny scratches, a few tiny pit marks and general aged patina to the rear. There are a some very tiny chips to the corners of the granite sections, as they stick out, slightly \'proud\' or raised above the silver heart. This is also common to this style of jewellery. These chips are so tiny they are not visible to the naked eye, especially with the the granite being in mottled tones.
Dimensions: the pendant has a hanging length of just under 1.5 inches (3.5cm) long (including the jump ring), by just under 1 & 1/8 inches (2.8cm) wide, at the widest part of the heart. It weighs 9.1 grams.
Overall, a hard to find and unusual attractive Scottish-made granite pendant, that features Jersey, and in good used antique condition, ready to wear and give many more year\'s enjoyment.
