INTERESTING VINTAGE ANTIQUE SCRAPBOOK ORIENTAL TRAVEL HANDWRITTEN DIARY 1902 This interesting scrapbook/ journal measures about 8" by 9 1/2" and is 1 1/2" thick. There are 62 handwritten diary pages in the front. These are followed by 50 pages of ephemera, the rest of the book is blank.The writer of this book was Murray Coggleshell, who was apparently a businessman with the American Trading Co. selling cotton fabric. This is a business trip starting in NY, he takes trains to San Francisco where he takes the Pacific Mail Steamship SS China to Honolulu, on to Japan and then on to China. He writes 62 full pages of his trip with great detail.This was a business trip, some of which is described, but there is lots of sightseeing, shopping and baseball playing going on. The journal begins April 12 1902 and tells of train trip to San Francisco. there are then nice steamship details with the latitude, logitude and miles traveled noted everyday. After stop in Honolulu ship arrives Yokahama after almost a month of travel. Good descriptions of the ships in the harbor, Japanese theater,and Geishas. There is an interesting story of a fire in the "poor district- Japs running frantically to and fro carrying their little paper lanterns..". He and his friends help "a bewildered old couple" save their things from the fire.There are detailed descriptions of kimonos, Satsuma ware and cloissone.He travels on to Kobe, then to Shanghai to the American Trading Co. office to show samples to Chinese buyers "our prices are too high today and it will take hard driving to displace the English bleached cottons".There follows lots of sight seeing,shopping and baseball games between American soldiers from ships and the Shanghai team.The journal finally ends in Honolulu on Thurs July 24. The scrapbook section contains lots of interesting ephemera relating to the trip. Most pieces are glued in, there are a few loose pieces. There are telegrams, calling cards, menus and photos. Some are very colorful. There are some letters of recommendation, some from the US government.Brochure for the Pacific Mail SS China Voyage #61 has a list of passengers, a small route map and a log which is all filled out. There is also a log and passenger list for the O and O SS Coptic Japan and China route, and one for the ship taken back to Honolulu the "SS America Maru".An interesting, well detailed account of a trip to the Orient in the early 1900's !
