Antique Signed With Star In Circle Abp Cut Glass Punch Bowl & Stand Empire Argo:
Dating from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s American brilliant period cut glass is ranked by many as being the finest, most beautiful cut glass ever made. Signed pieces are especially rare, and are prized by collectors. This two part punch bowl and stand was cut around the turn of the last century by the Empire Cut Glass Company of New York City and Flemington New Jersey in the Argo pattern. The acid etched star in circle signature which is present on the inside middle of the bowl may indicate that the blank came from the Libbey Glass Company. The blank is brilliant and white. The cutting is sharp, intricate and precise.
The bowl is about 10” wide. The bowl and stand together are about 7 ¼” high. Condition is good for the age of the piece. I had to scrutinize the piece to find a few pin point sized flea bites in the pattern. There are three small shallow flakes around the outer circumference of the top of the base. There are shallow chips and flakes on some of the base teeth. Please see photos. I have marked what I think are the largest chips with a piece of tape, as shown in the photos.
The piece could be restored to perfection, but I feel that the damage is noticeable only on close inspection and does not detract significantly. Please review the photos carefully.
This punch bowl and matching base are truly “cut to pieces”. The piece sparkles like a thousand diamonds and makes a dramatic centerpiece for a table.
