Antique Silver & Natural Shell Thimble
English * Circa 1820
This rare antique thimble is made of natural shell with a sterling silver top (tested). The top has hand punched knurling and silver filigree scrolls are inlaid into the shell around the band. Because of the reflection is was very hard to photograph it so that the shell patterns show through. It measures slightly over 5/8" high and it's about an American size 8 (15 mm diameter opening).
The condition is excellent with polished sides and no holes or damage to the top or sides. The silver inlay is all intact. Some other shell thimbles are shown on pp. 76-77 of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of the Thimble and one of very similar form is shown in photo P-58 on the color plate 11 in EstelleZalkin's book Thimbles & Sewing Implements.
