This solidsilver compendium is over 250 years old. It\'s solid silver(tests 850/1000 pure) and isextremely heavy and solid (weighs 52.4grams). It stands uprighton a seal base that is not monogrammed but has a crown hallmark ormaker\'s mark. KaySullivan shows several examples of silver compendiums in this style onpp. 16-17 of herbook NeedleworkTools & Accessories - ADutch Tradition. Shesays they were probably made in Germany.

It unscrewsinto 6 pieces.At the bottom is the seal attached to a needle case. Next is acompartment for powder with a hole in the top for sprinkling (to drythehands). That unscrews in the middle so the powder can be added. Abovethat is a flat waxcompartment and a double bobbin screws onto that.The thimblescrews onto the top. Itisdecorated with stylized floral and linear designs. Thethimble is about anAmerican size 9 (15.4 mm diameter opening). Thecondition is excellent with no damage and it measures 4 1/8\"tall.
