Genuine Singer hand-crankassemblies are very difficult to find, which explains why so many reproductionsare sold. The originals are true antiques:beautifully made, smooth and well-finished, surprisingly heavy for their size, and with a lovely patina that only comes with use and time. Reproductions arecrudely made, lightweight, and roughly finished. Please understand that I’m notagainst reproductions, especially for sewing machines that are badly worn butstill useable. After all, reproductions sell for a small fraction of the priceof originals and they do work pretty well. But a treasured antique sewingmachine deserves the genuine article.

This hand-crank assemblycame to us on the gorgeous 1923 Singer Model 15 shown in photos nine, elevenand twelve. (Please note that the Singer 15 is not included in this sale.) Thisassembly is in excellent condition and we have included lots of photos so youcan see exactly what you’re getting. It has been cleaned and properlylubricated and is ready to install, and the attachment screw shown in photo tenis included.

Photo five shows the back ofthe crank, and if you have good eyes you can see the acronym “SIMANCO” stamped there.“SIMANCO” stands for “SInger MANufacturing COmpany.” There are two other “SIMANCO”stamps on this assembly, and it is a genuine Singer part.

What Singer Models will itfit? Practically any antique or vintage Singer machine, provided the machinehas the large, spoked hand wheel shown in photos eleven and twelve (thosewheels measure about five-and-one-half inches in diameter), and the raised, threaded boss shown in photo nine. Machines manufactured before the “electricera” do not have that boss (it’s where the bracket for an electric sewing motorgoes), but starting in the early 1900s Singer added it to just about everythingthey made. We have seen this type of hand-crank installed on both antique and vintageSinger Model 15, 27, 28, 66, 99, 127, 128 and 201 machines.

How is it installed? Take alook at the top right-hand corner of photo six. The oval part with a hole inthe middle fits over the raised boss on your machine, and the screw shown inphoto ten goes through the hole and attaches the hand-crank assembly to the boss. It’s easy to do and takes less time than it took you to read theseinstructions!

How does it work? The crankwith its beautiful hardwood knob (photo four) turns a large gear inside thehousing. That large gear meshes with a small one (bottom left corner of photoseven) that drives the arm (photo eight), which gives you the same kind of gearreduction used on bicycles, and that makes the crank very easy to turn. The armends in a leather-wrapped finger, which slips between two of the hand wheel’sspokes (photo twelve) and drives your machine.

Hand-cranks take a bit oftime to master because it first at seems like you need two hands to guide thefabric and a third hand to turn the crank, but you’ll soon get used to it. Theonly thing counter-intuitive is that you turn the crank away from you to makethe internal gears turn the hand wheel towards you, but once again, you’ll soonget used to it and it will shortly become second nature. We hope it helps youto make lots of beautiful things.
