Fabulous Springfield wooden doll made in Springfield Vermont. These jointed wooden dolls were originally made by Joel Ellis in 1873 thru 1874. At this time a group of men formed a cooperative, making many variations of the doll thru 1885, most being made by Mason & Taylor. This doll is 12” tall, jointed at the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. It has the solid, rock maple head found on the early Joel Ellis dolls, later dolls had a composition head. However the style of the hip joints on this doll is most often attributed to Mason & Taylor. That said I would assume this doll was made in 1874 or 75 during the transitional period. This is a great doll generally in very good condition with less than normal paint wear to the head. The jointed wood body is in very good condition but does have a split to the left arm as shown. Lighter ring around the waist is were the original paper label was, another trait of the Joel Ellis dolls. Pewter hands and feet with original blue paint on the feet, the thumb is missing on the right hand. A fabulous example of the wonderful, early Springfield wooden dolls. Thanks for looking!
