Antique Staffordshire transferware red plate, pattern Canova, England, 19thc.:
$55.00

ca. 10.5\" wide

This is a wonderful English transferware plate from Staffordshire; burgundy red on white.
The pattern is \"Canova\".
The plate may have been made by Thomas Mayer; a Staffordshire earthenware factory that held an extensive export trade with US.The central transfer is a romantic scene featuring a garden, a river with boats and nearby buildings (see photos).
It is surrounded by eight panels with alternate floral arrangements and a similar garden/river scene (see photos).
Scalloped rim.
Nicely glazed surfaces. The back of the plate has a transferware design of a classical Greek crater on a pedestal and underneath the words \"Canova\" and \"Stone Ware\" (see photos).
It probably dates from the middle 19th century.

The plate is in exceptionally good pre-owned condition considering its age and use!
There are no chips, flakes, visible cracks, nor any other damage, or restoration.
There is extensive crazing (front and back) and extensive brownish staining (also front and back) (see last 3 photos); all expected due to age and use.
Three sets of three marks at the back were made by the kiln supports during firing. Please study the photos closely, because they form part of the description.
(Please excuse the glare!)It came from a wealthy Massachusetts home. This is a very ornate plate that would look equally nice on your wall, or inside your cabinet.
