Antique Sterling Silver 1/4 Pint Christening Cup or Mug by Emile Viner of Sheffield dated 1940
This Antique Christening Cup or Mug measures approximately 3 1/4 inches or 82 mmacrossfrom the handle to the front of the upper rim by just under 2 3/8 inches or 60 mm across the width or diameter of the upper rim from side to side and it stands 2 3/4 inches or 71 mm tall tothe topof its upper rim.
The cup or mugis made from sterling silver with a slightly tapering circular body that has a flared upper rim and it stands on a raised circular foot, the cup has a D shaped handle on the side of its body and it has a 1/4 of a pint, 5 fluid ounce or 125 ml liquid capacity, the cup or mug has Not been engraved witha previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the side of its upper body has been impressedwith a full set orEnglish sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
E.V - Crown -Lion Passant - X
E.V is the Sheffield silversmith ormakersmark of Emile Viner, the Crown is the mark of the Sheffield assay office, the Lion Passantis the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver andtheletter X is thedate letterfor 1940.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age,
The Christening Cup or MughasNo Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks No Holes and No Repairs thatI have found,the cup stands straight, the definition is crisp, the cup silverhallmark is still clearly legible although as this christening cup or mugisa usedantique itdoes have two small shallow dents of which on is in its handle and the other one is in its upper rim, it has some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. Personally I think thatthisantique christening cup or mug can still be given as a gift or used today and that it will make a superb addition toany cabinet collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it's almost 75 years old.
