Edwardian Sterling Silver Dining Table Gravy Server or Sauce Boat by Mappin & Webb Ltd dated 1907
This Antique Gravy Server or Sauce Boatmeasuresapproximately 6 1/2 inches or 165 mm across its lengthfromthe handle to the pouring lip by 2 7/8 inches or 73 mm across the widest partof its upperbody from side to side and itstands 2 5/8 inches or 67 mm tall tothe top of its handle.
The gravy server or sauce boat is made from 104.1 grams of sterling silver in a classical oval shape that stands on three shaped legs that have lily pad like feet, the gravy server or sauce boat has a shaped upper rim with an extended pouring lip and it has a raised relief decorated scroll shaped handle on the back of its body, the gravy server of sauce boat has Not been engravedwitha previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the underside of the body has been impressed with the famous silversmith and retailers name Mappin & Webb, London along with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that readas follows,
Mn & Wb- Lion Passant- Leopard Head - m
Mn & Wb is the famous London silversmith ormaker and retailers mark of Mappin & Webb Ltd, the Lion Passantis the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Leopard Head is the mark of the London assay office and the letter m isthe date letterfor 1907.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for its age.
The gravy server or sauce boat hasNo Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs sauce boat stands upright, the decoration and definition is very crisp, the silverhallmarkis still clearly legible, the sauce boat holds liquid without leaking although as the sauce boat is a used antiqueit does have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that isto be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique gravy server orsauceboat canstill be used on a dining table today and that would make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's almost 110 years old.
