Edwardian Sterling Silver Relief Decorated Petite Match Box Holder by H C Freeman dated 1904
This Antique Match Box Holder measures approximately 1 3/4 inches or 46 mm in length from end to end by just over 1 1/8 inches or 30 mm across its width from side to side and it stands 3/4 of an inch or 20 mm tall.
The match box holder is made from sterlingsilver in a rectangular shapeand it stands on four ball shape feet, the sides of the match box holder are open so that when a match box is in place you can still push out the inner match box drawer and use the strike on thesides of the match box, the topof the the match box holder has an applied raised relief and engraved scrolled foliage and floral decoration around a shaped raised cartouche that has Notbeen engravedwitha previous owners initials or familymonogram and the holder is complete with a petite matchbox and drawer all as photographed below, the underside of the body has been impressed with a full set ofEnglish sterlingsilver hallmarks that read as follows,
H.C.F -Anchor - Lion Passant- e
H.C.F is the London silversmith or makers mark of Henry Charles Freeman whose mark is recorded as being used from 1896 until 1911, the Anchor isthe mark oftheBirmingham assayoffice, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterlingsilverand the letter e isthe date letter for 1904.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age.
The Match Box Holder hasNo Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks and No Repairs that I canfind, theholder stands upright, the definition is crisp, the silver hallmark is stillclearlylegible although as thematch box holderis aused antique it does have the odd small shallow dent along with some polishing wear holes in the raised decoration and it has some minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and as the matchbox holder is in the totally original condition that it was found a gentle cleanwould enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique petite match box holder would make asuperb addition to any collection and that it can still be used today, I also think that it has a delightful look about it consideringthat it's almost 110 yearsold.
This Delightful Edwardian SterlingSilver Relief Decorated Petite Match Box Holder by HCFreeman dated 1904 is oneof several pieces ofantique and collectable silver that I have also listed.
